Top Apps for Toddlers

A recent survey by webroot.com shared that a 70% of parents allow their toddlers and young kids to use their iPAD. Ok, you are thinking… so what.

However in same poll, parents have downloaded an average of eight apps designed specifically for kids. I thought this was interesting – eight apps. Business is booming in the app world when you think of how many parents are out there. Tambourines are out. Apps are in.

app_for_toddlersBut this isn’t surprising when you see children bundled up with a babycino, an iPAD and their parents praying they can finish at least one hot meal out. Ahhh, a hot meal….when did this become a luxury!

So with parents having around eight apps on their iPAD alone (not counting your iPhone too) you may find this list helpful. .

Also make sure all the apps you get for the kids are password protected. One of my friends shared that her sister’s child racked up $160 from upgrading the apps unknowingly whilst they were playing!!

This isn’t an infinite list as there are so many out there so please comment/ share apps you think are good so we can pass on to other parents.

1. ABC for kids (iPhone) & ABC iView (iPad) – FREE
For hours of entertainment whether in a restaurant, friends house or on the road. ABC iView provides catchup on all ABC shows including ABC kids and the ABC for kids on the iPhone provides music and video options for featured shows like the Wiggles and Yo Gabba Gabba

2. Reading Eggs – iPhone and iPAD (various prices based on programs)

Suggest firstly go to readingeggs.com.au and sign up for the 14 day FREE trial for all 3 programs – ABC Reading Eggs, ABC Reading Eggspress and ABC Mathseeds and then decide from there which apps/programs you want

This is really great to help your child learn to read and provide them math skills to boot. Focused on 3+ years this is a highly recommended app from parents to support your child’s education.

3.Tap the Cat – $2.99 iPAD

We were trying to share just FREE apps but couldn’t go past this one. Brought to you by reading eggs but a lovely app with plenty of entertainment built in – from drawing to quizzes to making words this is a great educational app to help engage your child. Yes it isn’t free but cheaper than a coffee!

4. Playschool Art Maker – FREE

Brought to you by ABC, this is a simple app that lets your child create art with their favourite Playschool characters. They can import videos and photos from your iPAD or iPhone and save them in a lovely album. It also has some episodes from playschools (streamed from ABC view) as an extra bonus to entertain your child.

5. Itsy Bitsy Spider – FREE

From puzzles, colouring books to bug races this is an app that has many dimensions to keep your child occupied. Some of the features such as “Spider Math” you do need to upgrade and pay some money but this is a good ‘value for money’ free app.

And a seasonal one that I tweeted about recently …

Portable North Pole -iPhone and iPAD $4.49

would highly recommend checking out this site to give your kids personalised Santa messages this Xmas. My friend who recommended this described this as “my daughter almost wet her pants when she got this message from Santa!” You can also check this out online http://www.portablenorthpole.com/
